Divine Rule The "doctrine" that kings and queens have a God-given right to rule and that rebellion against them is a sin. This belief was common through the seventeenth century and was urged by kings including King Louis XIV himself. |
Legacy and RulingLouis XVI of France faced many problems upon his ruling. His previous rulers had left him in a lot of debt and the taxation of the people was not making them very happy. The debt became a big problem and eventually he was overwhelmed and didn't know what to do until he came across a man named Robert Turgot. He helped ease the financial crisis in France until he thought it would be a good idea to tax the nobles more. The nobles and Parliament objected to this idea and King Louis XVI removed him from office. Louis then tried to fix things himself when he met with the Estates General. The crisis went from bad to worse. A few other things happened later on but came extremely quickly. France went to war with Austria under his command, France created its First French Republic, and in the end, Louis was captured and sentenced to death by guillotine in 1793.
